Kizhi, an island in Onega Lake in Karelia. There are 1369 islands in this Lake. Kizhi island plays a special role among the others. Plenty of forestry in Karelia called for the quick development of wooden architecture. The most striking monument of wooden architecture represent the manydomed temples of Kizhi Pogost: the Preobrazhenskaya (Transfiguration) Church with 22 domes erected in 1714, and the Pokrovskaya (Protection of the Virgin) Church with 9 domes built in 1764.
