Description: St. Petersburg metro is about 110 km long and is has got
60 stations. Like in Moscow, old stations are elegantly decorated whereas new
stations show a more functional design. The underground rivers that flow on the
territory of the city and proximity to the Gulf of Finnland caused difficulties
during the construction of the metro. At some stations passenger platforms are
separated from tracks by steel doors that open simultaneously with the doors of
the arriving train. The first underground line was open in 1955.
